Will Doxa do the double against APOEL? – Cyprus 1st Division previews 5 January

Cyprus 1st Division previews Saturday 5 January

The Cypriot league returns now from their small winter break. AEK and FC Pafos already played during the week their post poned game from Round 1 and some teams played in the Cup, but this is the first full round after the break. On Saturday we have 3 games. AEL will host FC Pafos, Anorthosis will meet Alki Oroklini and Doxa will host league leaders APOEL, the team they beat 2-5 in the first half of the season and the team they played against on Wednesday in the Cup.

Saturday 5 January

AEL vs FC Pafos 17:00 Tsirion Stadium, Limassol

AEL Limassol has been the biggest surprise so far this season but in their recent games, their problems have started to show. They are still on 2nd position and only 1 point behind leaders APOEL but they need to do something with that leaky defense. Out of their 18 goals conceded this season, 13 have come in the last 5 games.

FC Pafos is showing huge signs of improvement despite not showing that in the win column. They are still 9th but they are undefeated in their last 4 games. Those 4 games though were all against Big-6 opposition. They beat AEK 1-0 at home and drew 2-2 with Anorthosis away and 1-1 with Apollon at home. On Wednesday they were missing 6 starting line-up players and were still able to get back and draw 1-1. Now those 6 players are again available so tiredness should not be an issue either.

AEL beat FC Pafos earlier in the season 0-2 in Paphos, but the strengths of the teams are now a bit closer. Last season both teams won 0-1 away from home. Pafos can repeat that again here.

FC Pafos X2 Double chance is the main pick.

Anorthosis vs Alki Oroklini 18:00 Stadio Antonis Papadopoulos, Larnaca
1.29 – 5.00 – 9.25 -Bet NOW with Winmasters

The last time these teams met, Anorthosis had to settle for a disappointin 0-0 draw. Now though, the Famagusta team is in form. They are undefeated in their last 7 league games (5W 2D) and this form has moved them to 4th position. They are 9 points behind leaders APOEL. Alki Oroklini who are 10th have also found some form after a bad start to the season. They have now won 3 of their last 4 games and bottom club Ermis is already 6 points behind them.

Anorthosis has enjoyed a great offensive spell recently as out of their 20 goals this season, 11 have come in their last 5 games. Nika Kacharava has found his form and creating chances and scoring for his team. When Anorthosis scores, they do well as they still have a good defense. Only AEK (12) and Apollon (13) have conceded less goals than Anorthosis (14) this season and they both have played a game less. Things are definitely looking up for them.

Alki Oroklini has beaten Nea Salamina, Ermis and Doxa recently at the N. Papas Group Ammochostos-Epistrofi stadium and they have lost only to Omonia (0-2) and Apollon (3-0) in their last five games. Just like Anorthosis, they have found a way to score goals and that has led them to wins. Out of ther 12 goals this season, 8 have come in their last 4 games. Still though against solid defenses, they struggle to score.

Anorthosis is the stronger one and despite Alki finding the net recently, they will struggle against this defense. Anorthosis to win to nil.

Doxa vs APOEL 19:00 Makareio Stadium, Nicosia
8.75 – 4.50 – 1.33 -Bet NOW with Winmasters

APOEL lost to Doxa 2-5 in the first half of the season and that humiliation is still in the back of their minds. Now though APOEL is back to their own level so another win for Doxa will be extremely difficult especially as now they do not have their top scorer Berat Sadik who scored 4 goals in that first APOEL match. APOEL now leads the league with 1 point ahead of AEL and 5 points ahead of Apollon who has played 1 game less. Doxa has now lost their last 3 games and despite their good start to the season, they have dropped to 8th position. The teams met also on Wednesday in the first leg of the Cup Last-16 with APOEL winning 2-1 at the GSP.

APOEL has resurrected themselves after they changed their head coach and have now won 4 games in a row with the highlight being beating Apollon 5-1. The team plays with good confidence, but they are missing one crucial piece in this game. Their main attacking threat Moussa Al-Taamari is in the Asian Cup with Jordan and will miss this and a couple of other games also. Other players are contributing now also, but still without Al-Taamari, APOEL will not create as many chances as with him.

Doxa will be also without their top scorer Sadik whose wife is giving birth and he will be unavailable until the 7th January. He is also under a lot of transfer gossip so it could be that the Finnish international will leave the club anyway during January. Out of the 21 goals that Doxa has scored, he has scored 12 and he has contributed to a few others so him missing, is a big loss. Doxa is a decent home team with a 3-1-3 record and they have earned for instance a 1-1 draw against Apollon at home so they are not so easily beaten.

We had under 3.5 goals for the Cup and we will go again with the same pick. With both teams missing their biggest offensive threats, there should not be so many goals. Even under 2.5 goals is possible.
