Cyprus 2nd Division Previews: Friday could already decide one of the promoted teams

Here are the Cyprus 2nd Division previews for the Game Week 20.

There are 11 rounds left of the 2nd Division and the fight for promotion and relegation gets tighter. The big game is played already on Friday when 2nd placed Ethnikos hosts 3rd placed Othellos at the Dasaki stadium. Both teams are on 40 points and the winner here would have the edge on H2H.

Friday 15 February

Ethnikos Achna vs Othellos Athienou 19:00 Dasaki Stadium, Achna

This the most important match of the round and could be the most important match of the season for both teams. Ethnikos Achna and Othellos are tied on 40 points on positions 2 and 3. With two teams earning promotion to the 1st Division and in case of teams being tied in points, the main decider is Head2Head games. The first match in Athienou finished 0-0 so the winner of this match will have an advantage over the other one in case they are tied in points also at the end of the season. If the match ended 0-0 then the overall goal difference will decide. In any other draw, Othellos will have the advantage due to Head2Head away goals (if only 2 teams are tied).

Ethnikos Achna has lost only one game this season and at home they are undefeated with a 6-3-0 record. The draws though came at the start of the season and they have won their last 4 home games. They beat Anagennisi in their last home game 1-0 and that was only their second clean sheet at home this season. Last weekend they drew 2-2 away from home with Aris Limassol. The draw was a big result keeping Aris still 3 points behind.

Othellos Athienou is the best home team in the league (9-1-0) but on the road they have struggled a bit. Their away record is 3-3-3 with a goal difference of 13-11. Their only away wins have come against bottom half teams Omonia Aradippou, PAEEK and MEAP Nisou. They have managed to keep things tight though as their only away losses have all come with a result 2-1. Since their first two away games, they have only lost to league leaders Olympiakos.

Prediction: Main pick is both teams to score. Ethnikos has failed to score at home only once (Aris 0-0) and Othellos has scored in every away game so far this season. For higher odds Ethnikos to win by exactly 1 goal.

Saturday 16 February

Omonia Aradippou vs Aris 15:00 Dimotiko Stadio Aradippou

This is an important match for both teams but especially for the visitors. Omonia is 9th at the moment but only 2 points ahead of the relegation zone. Any points from this game would be considered as a bonus against one of the promotion favourites Aris Limassol. Aris is currently 4th with 3 points behind 2nd placed Ethnikos Achna. They cannot afford to drop points against bottom half opponents at this point of the season.

Omonia Aradippou´s season has not really gone the way they expected. They were in the top half last season and did not really had to fight against relegation. Now this is a reality and their form is not as expected either. From their last 5 games they have gotten only 4 points. They are a decent home team with a 5-0-4 record (Only team without a home draw) but they are very inconsistent. Their last five home games have gone L-W-L-W-L. To continue this streak they should get the win here, but it will not be easy against an Aris side desperately looking for promotion.

Aris had to settle for a 2-2 draw in their last game at home against Ethnikos. This was a bad result as it means that in case they and Ethnikos are level in points at the end of the season Ethnikos will be ahead on away Head2Head goals (if only 2 teams are tied). Aris has not really excelled away from home with a 4-2-3 record, but their recent away form is pretty good 3-1-1 with the only loss coming against Ayia Napa. Aris struggled with scoring goals in their away games early in the season but now in those 5 games they have managed 9 goals. In the 4 games prior to those they only scored once.

Prediction: Away win and for higher value away win by exactly 1 goal.

PAEEK vs Akritas 15:00 Gipedo PAEEK Keryneia Epistrofi

This is a big match regarding relegation. PAEEK is currently 14th with 16 points but their recent form suggests that they might have enough in them to climb out of trouble. Akritas is 10th but they are still only 2 points ahead of the relegation zone.

PAEEK has played really well in their recent two games. They beat Karmiotissa 3-1 in their last home game and last weekend they drew 0-0 with EN THOI Lakatamia. After some really bad defending in earlier games, they have now conceded only 1 goal in those two games. Prior to these games they averaged conceding 1.94 goals per game. PAEEK is the worst home team in the league but in their last 5 home games they have a 1-1-3 record. Those losses though came against top teams Ethnikos (0-2), Othellos (0-1) and ASIL Lysi (1-3). As already mentioned they were victorious in their last home game (3-1 Karmiotissa).

Akritas managed to end their 7-game streak of without a win last weekend when they beat bottom club Digenis 2-1 at home. Akritas has had a big problem with their defense all season as they have conceded 39 goals which is 2.05 goals per game in average. Away from home it has been even worse as in their nine games they have lost seven and won only two with a goal difference of 10-26. This means 2.89 goals conceded per game in average.

Prediction: Main pick is both teams to score but if looking for value then it is with the home side.

Ayia Napa vs EN THOI Lakatamia 15:00 Dimotiko Stadio Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa has fallen into the relegation zone but they should be better than what the standings might suggest. EN THOI Lakatamia found their form again earning 8 points from their last 4 games and they are now fairly safe in the mid-table with 25 points. Five points more than their hosts.

Ayia Napa has gotten 5 points from their last five games but the opposition has been really strong. They met during this time period three of the Top-4 teams and still managed to get 4 points from those games. Their last weekend´s loss away to Karmiotissa was a bit unlucky as they lost a 0-1 lead in the second half to lose 2-1. The good thing is that their offense and defense are both better so they are now a lot more balanced team than before. Ayia Napa is 3-2-4 at home this season with a goal difference of 11-14.

EN THOI Lakatamia started their season well with the help of their defense. They went through a bad period that started in December and ended in their 0-4 loss to Olympiakos on 11th January. During this spell they did not get any wins and scored only 2 goals conceding 11 in a 6 game period. That was a bad spell considering that they have conceded only 9 goals in the other 13 games. Now their offense is slightly better with two 2-1 wins coming in their last 4 games together with two 0-0 draws. They won their last away game 1-2 but that was against poor Akritas.

Prediction: Ayia Napa to win is the main pick but also under 2.5 goals as neither team have a really good offense. This is also a very important game for both teams so the defences should be in good form.

Onisilos vs Karmiotissa 15:00 Dimotiko Stadio Sotiras

The visitors do not have much to play for but they still have to be a bit carefull that they do not start sliding into the relegation battle that Onisilos is doing right now. The home side is just above the relegation zone on 11th position but the relegation zone is only 2 points away. Karmiotissa is 7th and 6 points ahead of their hosts.

Onisilos is in bad form. From their last 7 games they have won one and lost six. The big problem has been in scoring goals as in five of those seven games, they failed to score any goals. Their only win during this period was in their last home game where they beat ASIL Lysi 2-0. That made their home record 4-1-4 so far this season with goal difference 8-8.

Karmiotissa is in this situation only because of their good home form. They have been as good at home as has league leaders Olympiakos and Aris Limassol (7-2-1). It is their away form which is the issue with only 1 away win all season (1-2-6). That makes them the 3rd worse away team in the league just ahead of the two bottom clubs Digenis and MEAP. They have not been able to keep a single clean sheet yet this season away from home.

Predicition: Onisilos needs the points more, home win. Karmiotissa might also be already looking at their Cup game against Ethnikos next week.

MEAP Nisou vs Olympiakos 15:00 Koinotiko Stadio Pera Choriou

There should only be one winner here as the hosts are 2nd from bottom and already 7 points from safety against the best team in the league who are 5 points clear at the top of the table and looking like a certainty for promotion.

MEAP Nisou´s best asset at the start of the season was their defense which kept them alive in games as they could not trust their offense which is the worst of the league (15). MEAP has changed its game to be a bit more offensive as they need wins to save them and despite scoring 5 goals in their last 3 games, they have lost their last 4 games. Offense might be scoring but the defense is leaking even more than usual. MEAP has not won in 10 games and they have conceded an average of 3 goals per game in their last 4 games. It does not look good for them.

Olympiakos lost their first two games of the season but have not lost since. They are undefeated in 17 games and have won their last 5 games with a goal difference of 2-21. They are 7-1-1 away from home which is by far the best away record in the league. Only two of those games though has been a clean sheet. This is a team that likes to attack even at the expense of their defense but as long as it works, there is no problem.

Prediction: Olympiakos to win by at least 2 goals but to look for value bet on Olympiakos to win with both teams to score.

AE Zakakiou vs ASIL Lysi 15:00 Gipedo Zakakiou

AEZ wont fight for promotion this season as they are only 1 point ahead of the relegation zone. This is mainly due to their poor start to the season which led them to concede too many goals. ASIL Lysi might play in the 1st Division in the near future but not yet this season. They are safely in mid-table as 6th and they are 11 points behind promotion places and 9 points ahead of the relegation zone.

AE Zakakiou got their act together in mid-December when they went on a 3-2-0 streak which took them out of the relegation zone and into safety. However their last 3 games have ended in losses, but those losses came against three of the Top-5 teams in the league and only their last weekend´s 5-1 loss to Othellos was a bad one. AEZ has a very good offense especially at home as they have scored 2 or more goals in their last 5 home games. Defensively they have been poor as besides their opening home game 1-0 win over Anagennisi, they have failed to keep a clean sheet. AEZ is 4-2-3 at home.

ASIL Lysi has been regularly inconsistent this season. They are 2-2-1 in their last 5 games and none of those matches were against any of the top teams. They are 3-2-4 away from home this season beating only PAEEK, Karmiotissa and Ayia Napa. Despite this inconsistent form, they have only lost twice in their last 10 games. Zakakiou beat ASIL Lysi in the first match 0-1 in Larnaca.

Prediction: Both teams to score is the main pick. AEZ to win for players looking for value.

Sunday 17 February

Digenis Voroklinis vs Anagennisi Dheryneia 15:00 Dimotiko Gimnastirio Agias Paraskevis

Things are looking very bleak for the hosts who are bottom of the league and already 8 points from safety. They need to start picking up back-to-back wins if they still want to play 2nd Division football next season. Anagennisi looks certain to play 2nd Division football next season. If they could have started their season the way they play now, they would definitely have been a promotion contender. Now they are 10 points from promotion on 5th position.

Digenis has only gotten 1 point from their last 7 games. Despite managing to score in five of those games, they still are let down by their defense which is the worst in the league with 40 goals conceded. That is an average of 2.10 goals per game. They are not too bad at home where they have gotten 10 points from their total 13 points this season (3-1-5). Still their five last home games have only given them 1 win and 4 losses.

Anagennisi started their come back in November when they beat ASIL Lysi 1-0. Since then they have gone to win 8, draw 2 and lose only to the top-2 teams in the league away from home (Olympiakos and Ethnikos). Their biggest problem has been away from home where they are 2-2-5 this season. Their last 5 away games though have been 2-2-1 with the only loss coming 1-0 against Ethnikos last weekend.

Prediction: Digenis needs the win but Anagennisi is just too strong. Away win with both teams to score.
