Cyprus 2nd Division previews: Last chance for Anagennisi to get into the promotion fight

Here are the Cyprus 2nd Division previews for the Game Week 21.

There are 10 rounds left of the 2nd Division and the fight for promotion and relegation gets tighter. The big game is played already on Friday when 3rd placed Aris Limassol hosts 5th placed Anagennisi Deryneia. There is a big fight for the 2nd promotion spot between Ethnikos Achna, Aris and Othellos, but Anagennisi has an outside chance despite still being 7 points behind.

Friday 22 February

Aris Limassol vs Anagennisi Deryneia 19:00 Tsirion Stadium

This is the big game this round with Aris in a big battle for promotion and not affording to drop points at this stage of the season. Anagennisi Deryneia has been in really good form recently and if their start of the season would have been even a little bit better, they would be in the same position as Aris is now. Still though with 10 rounds to go, 7 points difference can still be caught, but only if they win this match.

Aris Limassol had a bit of a weak start also as they struggled in finding the net especially in their away matches. When they learned to put the ball away, their results started improving. At home they play nice attacking football with a 7-2-1 record with the only loss coming against league leaders Olympiakos. In their 10 home games, only once have they failed to score 2 or more goals (1-0 vs AE Zakakiou). The attacking style of play though makes them concede some goals with only 3 clean sheets again AEZ, Digenis and EN THOI. In half of their home games the opposition has managed to score 2 or more goals. Aris is 4-1-0 in their last 5 games.

Anagennisi has been the in-form team in the league with their last 10 games going with 7-2-1 record. Their only loss during this time was against 2nd placed Ethnikos Achna 1-0. In comparison to Aris, they have earned their form with good defense with six of their last 10 games have ended in clean sheets and no one has managed to score more than 1 goals against them. Anagennisi is 3-2- 5 in their away games this season but are 3-1-1 in their last five away games conceding only two goals. To be fair though, besided Ethnikos Achna, the other teams have been from the bottom half of the table.

Prediction: Main pick is both teams to score. Aris is a good scoring team at home but at the same time, Anagennisi is capable of scoring also. Aris should be closer to winning but not by many goals. Maybe Aris to win by exactly by 1 goal with small stakes.

EN THOI Lakatamia vs Onisilos 19:00 Stadio Lakatamias

This is a mid-table battle with both teams having 25 points and on positions 8th and 9th. Neither can be too relaxed though as the relegation zone is only 3 points behind them so more points are needed. The first match between the teams in Sotira ended 0-0.

EN THOI lost to Ayia Napa in the last round 2-1 away from home, but at home they have been tough to beat with 2-6-2 record. They play very defensively at home with five of the ten games ending 0-0 including the last two against Digenis and PAEEK. At the same time EN THOI has managed only 7 goals in those 10 games conciding 9. Only Ayia Napa (2) and Olympiakos (4) have been able to score more than 1 goal against them at the Stadio Lakatamias.

Onisilos got a big 3-1 win over Karmiotissa in the last round but generally they have struggled with goals recently with them failing to score in their five of their last 10 games. Especially away from home they have struggled recently with three straight losses, but again two of those opponents were Othellos and Olympiakos. Onisilos is 2-3-5 on the road this season.

Prediction: Main pick under 2.5 goals with a small bet on correct score 0-0.

Saturday 23 February

Othellos vs Omonia Aradippou 15:00 Gipedo Othellos Athienou

This is a match where one team is trying to earn promotion (Othellos 4th) and one who are trying to avoid relegation (Omonia 13th). The first match between the teams in Aradippou ended 0-2 for Othellos.

Othellos is the best home team in the league with a 9-1-0 record and goal difference 35-6. That means that in average Othellos scored 3.5 goals per game at home and concedes 0.6 goals. That is an amazing record. Othellos has only played 19 games as their last weekend´s match against Ethnikos was post poned. Thus they come into this match well rested. Othellos is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games with their only loss coming against leaders Olympiakos.

Omonia is in really bad form at the moment with only one win (Digenis 0-2) and four losses in their last five games. All those losses though have come by exactly one goal and three of the opponents have been from the Top-5 (Aris, Anagennisi and Ethnikos Achna). They rarely celebrate away from home with a 2-1-7 record but we have a gut feeling that they can get something from this game.

Prediction: Main pick is X2 double chance or direct Omonia win for bigger value. These teams have a weird history. In their last 14 games, Omonia Aradippou won from the first 7 games 6 with 1 draw. In the last 7 games though Othellos has won 6 with 1 draw. Maybe now is again the turn of the Aradippou team.

ASIL Lysi vs Ethnikos Achna 15:00 GSZ Stadium, Larnaca

ASIL Lysi is one of the few teams with basically nothing to play for. They are 6th in the league with 11 points from promotion and 7 points from relegation. Ethnikos (2nd) on the other hand is the favourite to get the second promotion spot but they would need wins from games like these. The first match between the teams ended 3-1 for Ethnikos.

ASIL Lysi has been consistent all season without any big highs or any big lows. They have won only once this season two games in a row but at the same time they are yet to lose two games in a row. Now it can be close after they lost to AE Zakakiou in the last round. At home though ASIL Lysi has been solid. They only got 1 point from their first 3 home games but have not lost since. They are 5-2-0 in their last seven home games with the last five ending with both teams scoring.

Ethnikos Achna did not play last week so they can come into this match fresh and still on 2nd position in the league. Ethnikos is 8-1-1 in their last 10 games in the league with their last away match ending 2-2 against good home team Aris Limassol. Ethnikos has actually only lost once all season and they are the second best away team with 5-4-1 record with only 6 goals conceded in those 10 games.

Prediction: Ethnikos Achna to win with both teams to score.

Olympiakos vs AE Zakakiou 15:00 Makareio Stadio Nicosia

The hosts are heading towards promotion as they lead the league by 8 points despite playing one game more than Ethnikos and Othellos. AE Zakakiou is trying to save themselves after a poor start to their season and are currently 2 points ahead of the relegation zone on 10th position. Olympiakos beat AEZ 4-0 in the earlier game this season in Limassol.

Olympiakos is playing really good football at the moment as they are 18 games unbeaten with the last 6 games ending in a win. At home they lost their first game of the season but have since gone 7-2-0 with the only draws against Ethnikos Achna and Karmiotissa. Those are the only games during the 9 game period where they failed to score 2 or more goals. Recently their defense has also gotten better as their last two home games they have won to nil.

AE Zakakiou got an important win in the last round when they beat ASIL Lysi 2-1. That ended their 3-game losing streak where they lost to Othellos, Aris and Anagennisi. Now the opposition gets even harder so not many points are expected, especially as away from home AEZ is 2-1-7 this season. They have struggled in scoring away goals (8) but still in their last five away games they have scored at least 1 goal.

Predicition: Olympiakos to win to nil.

Karmiotissa vs MEAP Nisou 15:00 Dimotiko Stadio Pano Polemidias

Karmiotissa got a big morale boosting Cup win during the week and will move on to the quarterfinals. They have nothing to play in the league though as they are 7th with 12 points to the promotion and 6 points to the relegation zone. MEAP Nisou though needs points urgently in order to save their season. They are 2nd from bottom and safety is already 8 points away.

Karmiotissa will not take their foot from the gas just yet as they still want to be sure of not being relegated. They are also one of the best home teams in the league with a 7-2-1 record with their only home loss coming against ASIL Lysi. They will want the win here as their away form is awful and in their last five home games they will meet four of the Top-5 teams so wins might be tough to get there. Karmiotissa has gotten only two wins at home to nil this season. Every other game has had both teams scoring.

MEAP Nisou has not won since 25 November which means 11 games without a win. Their last 5 games have been losses. They had a solid defense earlier in the season but in search of wins, they had to open their play and that has not worked. In their last five games they have met five of the Top-6 teams and the maximum they have lost to any of them has been by 2 goals. MEAP is the 2nd worst away team in the league with a 1-1-8 record.

Prediction: Karmiotissa to win but both teams to score.

Akritas vs Ayia Napa 15:00 Koinotiko Stadio Chlorakas

This is a direct relegation battle between teams who are just 1 point ahead of the relegation zone on positions 11 and 12. Neither can afford to lose this one as it might mean that after the round, one of them would be in the relegation zone. Ayia Napa beat Akritas in October 3-0.

Akritas had a bad spell of form which lasted from mid-december to early february. During that time they only got 1 point from seven games. Now in their last two they have gotten 4 points but the opposition was against two teams in the relegation zone (Digenis and PAEEK). Akritas has been a good home team with a 5-1-4 record but with their defense no longer able to hold, the results have gone worse.

Ayia Napa is a better team than what their standings would suggest and recently their performance have been better. They are 2-2-2 from their last 6 games with the only losses coming against Olympiakos and Karmiotissa (both 2-1). They cannot keep a clean sheet to save their life but offensively they have scored in all of those 6 games. They are 2-3-5 on the road this season.

Prediction: Ayia Napa to win with both teams to score.

PAEEK vs Digenis Voroklinis 15:00 Gipedo PAEEK Keryneia Epistrofi

Another relegation battle between 14th PAEEK and bottom club Digenis. PAEEK still has a small chance of survival as safety is 6 points away and their performances a bit better. Digenis would have to go on a huge winning streak to save themselves and that does not look likely. Digenis beat PAEEK 2-1 in the first match.

PAEEK has not lost in their last 3 games and that is mainly because of their defense which has only conceded 1 goal in those games. They still look like a team who is fighting for survival but this is a game that they need to win. PAEEK has not been good at home with a 2-2-6 record. The problem has been in scoring goals as they have only managed to score 7 goals at home in 10 games. With their team playing defensively in recent games, there should not be many goals expected here either.

It is quite safe to say that Digenis is going to the 3rd Division at the end of the season. They are 10 points from safety and they have been awful away from home as they are the only team without a win on the road (0-3-7). They have also tried to play a bit more defensively recently and their defense is conceding less goals but at the same time their offense stopped scoring with only 2 goals scored in their last five games.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals is the main pick. There is a chance for 0-0 but most likely PAEEK will get a narrow 1 goal win.
