Cyprus 1st Division previews Sunday 15.9.2019

AEK vs Omonia 18:00 AEK Arena

The big match on Sunday is played in Larnaca with two teams hoping to continue their perfect start. AEK Larnaca picked up a 0-2 away win against FC Pafos in their only match so far whereas Omonia has beaten both Doxa and Nea Salamina with the same numbers and currently lead the league with 6 points.

AEK is known to be a very good home team at their own Arena, but still you have to see that they did not improve their team too much from last season. They lack a bit of depth and creativity in the midfield which can cost them in these matches against other big teams. You have to say that they were a bit lucky to come off with a win in Pafos. Still the core group of players has been together for a while and they have an excellent head coach who knows how to win in Cyprus.

Its been a long time since Omonia was challenging for the top spots in this league or even challenging for a Euro Cup place. Financial problems, poorly constructed teams have cost them, but this season, their fans have reason to be optimistic. They seem to have gathered a team with a lot of experience. Doxa and Nea Salamina may be weaker teams but still the way they beat them, was encouraging. Last season they struggled with goals, but looks like Matt Derbyshire is back hitting the net so, Omonia can be a dark horse in this season championship race.

The pick here is Omonia Draw no bet or Double chance Omonia, depending on how big odds you like.

Doxa vs Ethnikos Achna 18:00 Makareio Stadium

You could call this match a fight for relegation despite the fact that the season is only 2 rounds old. Neither Doxa or Ethnikos Achna is expected to make it into the top-6 and even getting into the top-8 might be difficult. That leaves the bottom four spots to fight for and this makes this match interesting. Neither can afford to lose to a close rival.

Doxa has not changed much from last season which means that the same problems still exist with the team. After they lost Berat Sadik to Spain in January, their goal scoring completely stopped. They have not been able to replace him. Still their defense is still experienced and good plus they have a good goalkeeper so they will never lose with a big margin. They have more quality than the teams that have just gotten up, but breaking down a solid defense could be tricky.

Ethnikos Achna got promoted after last season and their aim is to stay up. They have a decent starting 11, but their problems will start if they are missing any of them. Thanks to Miguelito, they have some offensive talent, but defensively they could be really weak. They started the season by beating Enosis Paralimni away from home 3-4 which was another relegation battle. A win against Doxa will be more difficult but they could get something from this match.

Main pick is both teams to score. Doxa cannot sit back against Ethnikos so the game will open up a bit.

Enosis Paralimni vs Anorthosis 19:00 Tasos Markou

This game should be a missmatch between an expected relegation battle team Enosis and between a European Cup place chasing Anorthosis. Enosis will again rely on their good home form to survive in the league but it might be more difficult this time around. They already lost at home to Ethnikos and then away to AEL and the opposition will be harder in this match.

Anorthosis has built a very good team for this season with plenty of firepower up front. This did not show in their opening game yet as they drew 0-0 away to AEL. This should not be the case here against much easier defense. Anorthosis needs a win here as they cannot afford to lose points against weaker teams. They have the team to do it so I expect a comfortable win.

Anorthosis to win by at least 2 goals is the main pick.
