APOEL Nicosia had a good 2014-15 season if you look at the results. They made it into the Champions League group stages and won the domestic double. If you look closely though, the season was far from perfect.

They were given a really tough group in the Champions League with Paris SG, Barcelona and Ajax but still they managed to earn only 1 point. In the league their points average was the lowest in 7 years. For the first time in 7 years they had less than 2.00 point average per game (1.94). Compared to the previous winning years they had 2.25 and 2.28 points per game.

On top of this they had 3 different managers during the season. Donis left in Decemer and Thorsten Fink did not last as his defensive tactics did not give the results they wanted. Gustavo Manduca was in charge for the final games and it was enough. They won because there was no other contender. Apollon, Omonia, AEK, Ermis and Anorthosis all took points from each other and that saved APOEL.

Now they start the season with another new manager, Domingos Paciência. The former Portugal and Porto striker has had an inconsistent start for his managerial career. It started well and he guided Braga into the Europa League final but after that it has been more downhill. He was released from Sporting CP, Deportivo La Coruna, Kayserirspor and Vitoria Setubal without even finishing the season. To be fair, in Deportivo and Kayserispor he came in the middle of the season. Now he will have a full pre-season to get his players ready.

The squad is mainly the same but there are a couple of crucial missings. From the starting eleven, they lost Left back Riise and striker Djebbour. On top of these Lanig who was a key player at the end of season after Fink brought him in, terminated his contract and went back to Germany. Third choice central back Kaka did not receive his Portuguese nationality and he might be released because there is no more room for another foreign player. They also released legendary keeper Chiotis, second striker Sheridan (who moved to rivals Omonia) and substitute midfielder Thiago Gomes.

Last season they waited too long to sign players. Both Riise and Djebbour were unfit when they signed them in August and it took them months to get match fit. Now they have been smarter and have signed more players to have a full pre-season. They brought in winger Vander from AEK Larnaca, Playmaker Stilic from Wisla Krakova, Right back Choco from Ludogorets Razgrad, central midfielder and Cyprus international Makrides from Metalurh Donetsk and striker Luis Leal from the middle east.

They also suffered a set back when number one goalkeeper Pardo required a surgery for his injury and will miss a few months from the beginning of the season. Instead of letting Chiotis take over, they released him and signed a new keeper from Getafe, Jordi Codina. He will start the season as number 1.

This will be an interesting season for APOEL and they are still missing a couple of more players but they are definately more prepared now than they were last season.
